About Black Walnut Trailhead
The unincorporated community of Black Walnut, settled in as early as 1810, was named for the grove of black walnut trees near the site.
The MKT Railroad arrived in Black Walnut in 1894. A post office operated in the community from 1875 to 1908, and in the early 20th century, there was a depot, icehouse and dozens of homes.
The most notable landmark in Black Walnut was the grain elevator, where operators purchased grain from local farmers and loaded it onto the trains for shipment.
