About Augusta Trailhead
Augusta was founded in 1836 by Leonard Harold, one of the settlers who followed Daniel Boone to St. Charles County. Chosen primarily for its excellent river landing, Augusta became a prosperous agricultural community. By 1855, it was producing grail, livestock and wine grapes. The origin of the town’s name is not known, but the Latin name means “great” or “magnificent.”
Augusta is best known for its vineyards, and while many of the towns struggled after the railroad left, Augusta thrived because of its vineyards. In the 1960s August experienced a revival of the vineyards, and today the area is an exciting destination, with several vineyards located near the trail.
Augusta was honored to be the first region awarded the title of “American Viticultural Area,” receiving the title even before Napa Valley.
