About Eugene Trailhead

Named for Eugene Simpson, the original landowner, the town of Eugene was officially incorporated on Aug. 3, 1904, following the construction of the Rock Island Railroad. It eventually included a grade school, high school, bank, hotel, post office and church. Area commodities included agricultural products and raw materials. When traveling east, Eugene is the final stop along the trail until it descends into the Osage River valley.

Today, only the post office and two churches remain in the unincorporated community, though it boasts the longest tunnel in the state park at 1,665 feet. Eugene is 21 miles southwest of Jefferson City and 13 miles east of Eldon.
